Biometric modality: Eye: Scleral vein – what is it?

The sclera is the white part of the eye and when the eyeball turns either to the left or the right a network of veins is displayed. It is these two networks in each eye (left and right side) that are used for scleral vein recognition and the concept is relatively new having been developed since 2008. The images are captured with a standard camera, infra-red camera or more commonly now a smartphone camera. [See also Vascular (Vein)].
